Preparing for the Cost Basis Reporting Law

The new cost basis reporting law, which was passed in October as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, requires cost basis reporting by financial institutions to the IRS and taxpayers. It will apply to stock acquired on or after January 1, 2011; open-end mutual fund and dividend reinvestment plan stock acquired on or after January 1, 2012; and debt instruments, options and other covered securities acquired on or after January 1, 2013. These effective dates may give some firms the impression that they have plenty of time to prepare. However, when considering the time it will take to develop, test and implement a system that complies with the law, it’s clear that firms must start preparing now. This session will explain the challenges of the new law, and what it means for financial and tax professionals.
